General Meeting — Monday, March 10, 2008 at Looma Hall at 7:30pm, speaker Dave Sonley — stretching exercises for the rider. Dave is a personal trainer. Where loose comfortable clothing, so you can practice some of these exercises at the meeting.
Tack Sale – Saturday, March 1, 2008 10am-2pm. Contact Barb 434-2000 to book a table. There will be a snack concession and a club table if you just have a few items to sell. We will have envelopes of advertisements at the February meeting. Please help by putting up advertising at local tack stores and barns.
Bowling and Pizza Night – Saturday, February 2, 2008 About 40 bowlers had a great night at the Sherwood Park bowling Lanes.
General Meeting — Monday, February 11, 2008 Christina Scott from West Wind Vet Clinic came and spoke about their new horse care program and vaccinations and deworming.

Christmas Potluck at Looma Hall – Monday December 10, 2007
Roping Clinic – Oct 6 & Nov 24, 2007 Members learned how to get their horses used to the rope and how to throw it.
General Meeting – Monday Nov 12, 2007 Our guest speaker was be a Paddi Sprecher from Canadian Trail House. She is an endurance rider and has a line of horse and horse related products such as saddles, halters, pads, stirrups, etc…This might be a great opportunity to purchase some Christmas Gifts. www.CanadianTack.com
General Meeting – Oct 9, 2007 Our guest speaker Adrienne Herron was from Alberta Agriculture and Food. Adrienne has a Bachelor in Science and a Masters in Animal Behaviour from the University of Alberta. Her presentation on “Equine Welfare” covered such topics as humane management and guidelines on horse slaughter. Tips on hauling: be sure to check your wooden floor, threads, tire pressure and gross weight of the vehicle when hauling. When horses are slaughtered most of their bodies are used; even the tendons for cardiac surgery in humans, As there is no legal slaughter of horses in the US, the animals are imported to Canada for slaughter. Many other issues were discussed. Call if you have any livestock care concerns 1-800-506-2273 – ALERT is a confidential call line for anyone to report livestock care concerns. ALERT has an on-call veterinarian who provides knowledgeable counsel. (Situations involving obvious neglect and abuse are handled by the SPCA)
Annual Poker Ride - Sunday Sept 16, 2007 Our very successful Poker Rally for STARS took place on Sunday, September 16th at the Ministik Bird Sanctuary. We had a perfect day for the ride – sunshine, almost no wind, beautiful fall colours and the calls of waterfowl ready to migrate. Seventy-four riders (73 horses – yes, someone rode double) attended, purchased 140 poker hands and had a safe, enjoyable ride. The winners: Allen Fowler - $150 for a flush, Dave Lawrence - $100 for a straight, and Vanessa Wyard-Scott - $50 for three of a kind.
BBQ and Barn Dance - Friday Sept 14, 2007 Another good old fashion Barn Dance. Everyone had a nice meal and sore feet at the end of the night. Thanks Murray Few for “calling” and providing the music. Many thanks again to Vicki and Dave for hosting and providing their acreage for the social.
Northlands Race Track – June 27, 2007 Thanks to Lisa Friedenberg for organizing this event. The Tour look took us through the barns, discussions with runners and jockeys as well as how to read a program and bet. After the tour, other members joined for an evening at the races. A lot of information and great fun and winnings!!!.
Pot-Luck Bar-B-Que & Pool Party June 9, 2007 Our wind up party was lacking in members, the weather not cooperating. However, it was a nice social get together. Thank you to Keith and Donna Dreger for hosting and providing their residence. |
